Designing for a warmer world

It’s a matter of… climate.

A variable that today plays a decisive role in designing outdoor spaces.

The lengthening of the warm seasons, the intensification of solar radiation, and the persistence of high temperatures are substantially changing the way gardens and terraces are conceived, especially in Mediterranean regions, where outdoor spaces accompany much of the year and take on a stable role in the living experience.

Outdoor spaces today require a conscious design approach from the very first decisions: solar exposure must be carefully evaluated, as well as coverings, which can be extended to create deep shade during the most critical hours, and surfaces, chosen based on their heat absorption and reflection properties. The design defines the conditions that make outdoor living both possible and enjoyable.

Shade, ventilation, and light become central compositional elements. Gazebos, umbrellas, and parasols define thresholds and transitional areas; surfaces regulate solar radiation; fabrics filter light and help maintain a balanced perceived temperature. Comfort arises from these choices and becomes an integral part of the project’s structure.

In the hospitality sector, this attention directly impacts the identity of the spaces. Terraces, entrances, and lounges are key areas of the guest experience and must ensure continuous usability throughout the year, maintaining formal coherence and reliability even under constant environmental stress.

Furniture and shading systems designed to withstand sun, salt, and humidity retain their proportions and definition over time, contributing to the overall quality of the outdoor space. Durability becomes a design criterion, guiding the selection of materials and the most appropriate technical solutions.

Designing for a warmer world means taking these conditions as a starting point and translating them into outdoor spaces that are carefully calibrated, integrated with the architecture, and able to maintain quality and comfort throughout the year.
